How do I get good?

Every day I head back home and the first thing I do is I sit at my desk. Turning on my computer, I stare at the colorful array of apps and games on the taskbar. I eventually settle on my victim - Osu, the rhythm game (but really, any independently developed app will work for my point in this case). As I play through my ten million beatmaps, I think to myself: 'holy shit, this Dean goonbert guy built this game from scratch in c# with sdl. And he finished his POC in a single night.' Eventually, these thoughts boomerang back to me because I must make everything about myself. "So why can't I do [x] too?" ... And of course, I try, and the thing stretches out to a week, two weeks, maybe the lucky three, but it's inevitable that I burn out (👀). Then, I will proceed to think: 1: Oh, it's probably because [someone]'s just better at [skill] than me! I reflect more, and find that this is somewhat true, but at the same time, skills take practice to develop, and there is no way bro started off + became proficient at it immediately. Just because I'm worse than bro doesn't mean I can't improve and get better at it. I was going to say it's not a race, but it probably is a race - I'm just saying that that shouldn't be the main thing pushing us on; that's why I'm coming up with all these excuses & i burn out. 2: [someone] has [talent] and that allowed them to do [x]. I don't have that shit so that's why I ended up like this. First of all, talent for sure can serve as a head start, but it doesn't carry [someone] the entire way to get to [x] - I'm saying talent without effort is useless, and so what [x] really is is just a bunch of passion that WE see as "talent". Also, we call people talented after they get good at things, so if I use the excuse of not starting by saying I don't have talent (or any of the above) that would be stupid 3: [someone] had [specific circumstance] that allowed them to do [x]. Again, I don't have to restate everything here to say that this point doesn't really stand. We have our set of specific circumstances, so why don't we use them to our advantage nd let them allow us to do [y]? 4: I have [limitation] and that's stopping me from doing [x]. Having limitations can also be a good thing, right? I'm not to sound like a motivational chud, but limitations don't actually stop you from getting to your goals, they just kinda steer us away & we gotta take control of the wheel **. Really depends on what your limitations are. But also I think mentality is a big portion of the pie **, and your mentals can account for some of the limits you say you have. For example, saying you're not smart enough is really just you saying that you don't wanna seem dumb. This can't remedy down every limit, we should try to look from a different perspective to see if our limitations are hollow 5: I lost motivation..... bro like im pretty sure the appel always comes after you plant the tree but whatever ** 6: No one appreciates my attempt. That doesn't actually get to how good the attempt actually was. It might have been a really good start and the people that judged your shit probably judged it too harshly for what you had and what you've done. ..... Excuses like these are endless + you can always come up with something that refutes it. So what's the way to get good? TUtorial below You can start off by accepting the hand you were given & say "fuck it ill give it a try just because I am genuinely interested in this topic and I want to improve. ***" Look up at other people's stuff and take inspiration from them but remember not to make THEM your reason to do the thing Prioritize and envision your goal vividly, think about the process from the goal up so that you take full responsibility of what happens When you falter and consider continuing or quitting, ask yourself again if you are interested in the work related with continuing your journey. If not, then quit, there's no use in doing something you don't genuinely enjoy. Torture yourself Just enough to keep going & Not too much so you hate it. Pace yourself so you look forward to what youre doing Do a bunch of random bullshit and live life *: I am aware that osu is not independently developed anymore, but it started off as **: I am not an AI. ***: if you aren't, then reconsider what you're doing. Are you doing something for yourself or for others. Are you CV farming. etc.
